Islay - Islay (name of a Scottish island) was also the name of Queen Victoria's favorite dog — Islay was the name of her favorite dog, a Skye terrier. Paul Johnson (from The Spectator) wrote: Then there was a Skye terrier called Islay, the little dog Victoria came to love most of all. She taught him to beg for titbits, a posture he worked up into an accomplished act in which his supplicatory paws were excelled only by the piteous expression in his soulful eyes.
Islay died on April 26, 1844 and is buried in Adelaide Cottage, Windsor Castle. In 1987, he was honored with a wishing well in front of the Queen Victoria Building — QVB, designed by George McRae and completed in 1898 and drastically remodeled since then — in Sydney, Australia. His statue was modelled from a sketch drawn by Queen Victoria herself, in 1842. When you approach the well, you heard Australian radio presenter John Laws saying: Hello, my name is Islay. I was once the companion of the great Queen Victoria. Because of the many good deeds I have done for deaf and blind children, I have been given the power of speech. All pennies people leave on the well are given to the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.

Paul Johnson (da revista The Spectator) certa vez escreveu sobre ele: Havia um Skye terrier chamado Islay, um cãozinho que Vitória amava mais do que a todos os outros. Ela o ensinou a pedir bocadinhos de comida, fazendo uma cena onde suas patinhas suplicantes só perdiam para a expressão pidona dos seus olhos cheios d'alma.
Islay morreu em 26 de abril de 1844 e esá enterrado na Adelaide Cottage, no Castelo de Windsor. Em 1987, ele foi homenageado com um "poço do desejo" em frente ao Edifício Rainha Vitória (Queen Victoria Building, QVB, projetado por George McRae, inaugurado em 1898 e desde então remodelado drásticamente), em Sydney, Austrália. A estátua de Islay foi esculpida por Justin Robson. Quando as pessoas se aproximam do monumento, se ouve a voz do radialista australiano John Laws dizendo: Olá, meu nome é Islay. Fui companheiro da grande Rainha Vitória. Por causa das muitas boas ações que fiz pelas crianças cegas e surdas, foi me dado o poder de falar.
Todo o dinheiro deixado na fonte (é costume se jogar moedas em fontes e fazer pedidos) é doado ao Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.

Jim the Wonder Dog - Jim (a Llewellyn Setter) was an extraordinary dog — among other things, he understood commands in foreign languages and the morse code, knew colors and numbers, and could tell the future (he foresaw the Kentucky Derby winners for 6 years). His owner, Sam van Arsdale, noticed the intelligence of the dog for the first time when, hunting, he said he would like to rest under a tree (and named it) and Jim went straight to the exactly tree. Van Arsdale and Jim performed all over the country — but never did the man make money with the dog. Arsdale even refused a proposal by Disney to tell Jim's story in a movie.
Jim was born at Taylor Kennels on March 10, 1925, in Louisiana, and died suddenly on March 18, 1937, in Marshall, Missouri, where he lived all his life. Arsdale wanted to bury him in the family mausoleum, at the Ridge Park Cemetery, but had to do it outside; however, as the cemetery expanded over the years, nowadays Jim is buried inside the cemetery. Downtown Marshall, there is a Jim the Wonder Dog Memorial Park, built in 1999 where the Ruff Hotel (owned by Arsdale) used to be.

Seu dono, Sam van Arsdale, notou pela primeira vez as habilidades de seu cão quando, durante uma caçada, comentou que gostaria de descansar sob uma determinada árvore; Jim então, dirigiu-se exatamente àquela espécie e nela colocou sua pata. Homem e cão viajaram por todo o país fazendo apresentações, mas Van Arsdale nunca quis ganhar dinheiro com Jim; em 1932, a Disney ofereceu uma grande soma para que ele estrelasse um filme e Sam recusou, pois achava que os dons do cachorro foram dados por Deus e não deviam ser explorados (ele nunca apostou nas corridas de cavalo).
Jim nasceu no Taylor Kennels em 10 de março de 1925, em Lousiana, e morreu, de repente (estava indo pescar com seu dono), em 18 de março de 1937, em Marshall, Missouri, onde viveu toda sua vida; o dono quis colocá-lo no mausoléu da família no Ridge Park Cemetery, mas como não foi permitido, enterrou seu amigo fora dos limites do campo santo. No entanto, como este precisou ser aumentado, hoje em dia o túmulo do cão está dentro do cemitério... Já a estátua fica no centro da cidade, no Jim the Wonder Dog Memorial Park, construído em 1999 onde ficava o Ruff, hotel administrado por seu dono e lar de Jim.

Jock of the Bushveld - Jock was the dog of South African politician Sir James Percy FitzPatrick (1862-1931). When he was young, due to his job as ox-wagon rider — he used to transport supplies for the gold fields from Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) to Lydenburg and Barberton — Fitzpatrick traveled a lot around the Bushveld region.
So it happened that during the first journey to Lourenço Marques (in 1885), Jess, the dog of Ted Sievewright (a member of Fitzpatrick's traveling group) gave birth under a big tree; of the six puppies, Fitzpatrick decided to keep the runt (saving him from being killed, the others were all adopted), naming him Jock. From them on, man and dog were inseparable.
Years later, already a politician (among other achievements, he played a great part in the creation of the Union of South Africa), he used to tell stories about his travelings with Jock to his four children — Nugent, Alan, Oliver, and Cecily; a good friend, author Rudyard Kipling, knowing about this, persuaded him to write a book, what Sir Fitzpatrick did in 1907. Jock of the Bushveld, with illustrations by English artist Edmund Caldwell, ended up becoming a South-African classic, having been translated to many languages.
Jock died after being shot by mistake; the target was another dog that was killing chickens on a farm (and that had already being killed by Jock).
Jock deserved three statues in South Africa:
1. Barberton, Mpumalanga - sculpted by Ivan Mitford-Barberton (1896-1976), was unveiled by the only alive descendant of Sir Fitzpatrick, his daughter Cecily Niven (his other three children died between 1917 and 1927) at the Fitzpatrick Park; in 1984, as part of the commemorations of Barberton's centenary, it was moved to the front of the City Hall.
2. Johannesburg - sculpted by Laurence Chait for the centenary of the suburb of Parktown and cast in bronze by the Renzo Vignalli Foundry in Pretoria, was unveiled on November 11, 1992, in front of the Johannesburg Hospital; at the ceremony was present Jonathan Rands, the actor who played the role of Sir Fitzpatrick on the movie Jock of the Bushveld, released in the same year. After being damaged in an attempt of stealing (it had its hind legs sawn through), the statue was placed, after being repaired, indoors. However, as everyone agreed that it wasn't the right place to Jock to stay, it was moved to the Johannesburg Zoo, where it was unveiled on January 25, 2008.
3. Mpumalanga/Limpopo (Kruger National Park) - at the Jock Safari Lodge, in the Jock of the Bushveld Concession Area. The lodge (the first private on the park) was built by the Niven family. Jock is fighting a kudu.
Also, Jock's birthplace is marked along the Voortrekker Road as well as Jock of the Bushveld Way marks have been placed on rocks sit on modern roads that cross the original ones Jock and his fellow humans had traveled.
In 2011, it'll be released a 3-D animated movie: Jock of the Bushveld: Four short legs. One huge heart, with the voices of Bryan Adams, Helen Hunt, Donald Sutherland, William Baldwin, Desmond Tutu, Robert Hobbs, Makenzie Hart and Mallory Hart.

cachorro do político sul-africano James Percy FitzPatrick (1862-1931). Durante os anos 80, o jovem Fitzpatrick costumava viajar bastante pela região de Bushveld (savana tropical), pois, como condutor de carro de boi, levava suprimentos de Lourenço Marques (hoje em dia Maputo) para os garimpeiros nas minas em Lydenburg e Barberton. Aconteceu que na primeira viagem para Lourenço Marques, em 1885, Jess, a cadela de Ted Sievewright (membro do grupo que viajava com Fitzpatrick) deu à luz, à sombra de uma árvore, a uma ninhada de 6 cachorrinhos. Cinco deles foram logo adotados, sobrando o menorzinho — que teria sido morto se Fitzpatrick não tivesse decidido ficar com ele, batizando-o de Jock. A partir daí, cachorro e o homem não se separaram mais. Jock era muito leal a Pecy e muito valente.
Anos mais tarde, quando já era um político proeminente (entre outras conquistas, Fitzpatrick teve um papel importante na criação da África do Sul), ele costumava contar histórias sobre suas aventuras com Jock para seus quatro filhos — Nugent, Alan, Oliver e Cecily; o escritor Rudyard Kipling sabia deste costume do amigo e insistiu para que Fitzpatrick publicasse um livro, o que ele fez em 1907. Jock of the Bushveld, com ilustrações do pintor inglês Edmund Caldwell, acabou se tornando um clássico da literatura sul-africana, tendo sido traduzido em muitos idiomas, em mais de 100 edições diferentes.
Jock morreu após levar um tiro que não era dirigido a ele e sim a um outro cão que estava matando galinhas em uma fazenda (e que já tinha sido morto pelo próprio Jock).
Jock mereceu três homenagens na África do Sul; Há também várias plaquinhas com a imagem de Jock afixadas em pedras localizadas em estradas que cruzam com os caminhos originalmente percorridos por ele e Fitzpatrick, uma ideia da filha de Sir Fitzpatrick, Cecily Niven. Em 2011, estava previsto para ser lançado um filme animado em 3D: Jock of the Bushveld: Quatro patas curtas. Um coração enorme, com as vozes de Bryan Adams, Helen Hunt, Donald Sutherland, William Baldwin, Desmond Tutu, Robert Hobbs, Makenzie Hart and Mallory Hart.

No entanto, como a localização da estátua a colocava em perigo — tentaram até mesmo roubá-la serrando as patas de trás de Jock — ela foi colocada, depois de reparada, no hall de entrada do hospital. Como todos concordavam que aquele não era um local ideal para Jock ficar, em 25 de janeiro de 2008 a estátua mudou-se definitivamente para o Zoológico de Johannesburgo — não sem antes dar uma passadinha na fundição para uma limpeza.
